Man charged after allegedly firing gun while hitting man after church league basketball game
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Columbia man has been charged after he allegedly shot a gun while hitting someone in the head after a church league basketball game earlier this month.
Marquise Mathis was charged on Friday with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of armed criminal action, one count of second-degree assault and one count of illegal gun possession.
He was not listed on the Boone County Jail roster on Friday night. A motion to set bond was filed on Friday and a warrant was requested.
According to the probable cause statement, a man claimed that Mathis was upset about some things that were said following a basketball game on Nov. 2 at Forum Boulevard Christian Church. The victim saw Mathis leave the church building and thought he was leaving the area, the statement says.
As the victim left the building, he saw Mathis holding a gun in the parking lot, the statement says. Mathis then allegedly threatened to kill the man and he hit the man in the head with the gun, the statement says. The gun apparently fired and damaged a vehicle as he struck the victim, court documents say.
Mathis then allegedly took off in a vehicle, the statement says. A witness allegedly also saw Mathis hit the victim and saw the gun go off, court documents say. A shell casing was also found at the scene.
Mathis’ vehicle was found later, the statement says. The victim was able to point out Mathis in a photo lineup on Nov. 6, according to court documents.
