COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A judge in Boone County has ordered a local man extradited to Indiana immediately to face murder and rape charges in a 1993 Indianapolis homicide.

Dana Shepherd, 52, of Columbia, is accused of killing Carmen Van Huss in March 1993. Police said the victim was found dead with signs of a struggle in an apartment early that day.

In 2013 investigators used DNA from the victim and blood found at the scene to create a profile of an unknown man, according to court documents. Investigators received a tip in June 2023 advising that a user of Parabon Nanolabs may be related to a person-of-interest connected to the DNA sample, according to court documents.

The investigating officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department connected the user to Shepherd.

Judge Kimberly Shaw on Thursday ordered Shepherd sent to Marion County, Indiana, immediately. It wasn't clear when Indiana authorities would come to Missouri to get Shepherd.

Shepherd has been in the Boone County Jail without bond since late August.
