COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A man who was accused of stealing a gun from a Missouri State Highway Patrol vehicle pleaded guilty to multiple felonies on Monday.

Jamarie Young Johnson, 20, of Columbia, pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree burglary, three counts of stealing a gun, two counts of first-degree property damage, felony stealing, misdemeanor stealing and misdemeanor fraudulently using a credit/debit device.

He was sentenced to five years of probation on Monday, with the possibility of having to serve up to 22 years in prison. A restitution docket hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21.

According to court documents in previous reporting, an MSHP trooper in Ashland had at least one gun, a ballistic vest and three rifle magazines containing ammunition stolen from his patrol vehicle on Aug. 24, 2023. The vehicle was parked in his driveway in Ashland and the right, rear passenger window was smashed in, court documents say.

Three people wearing face coverings were allegedly seen on video getting out of a white SUV and walking toward the trooper’s driveway, documents say. The probable cause statement said police in Columbia and Ashland and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office were working similar cases. Several videos and photos were gathered that included the same vehicle and people, court documents said.

Johnson was eventually arrested in Columbia and he allegedly confirmed to law enforcement that he was present during the theft.
