Charges dropped against MU Homecoming weekend shooting suspect; could be refiled

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The man accused in a shooting that left three people injured on the University of Missouri's Homecoming weekend two years ago saw his charges dropped Friday.

Boone County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Knerr wrote in an email Friday that charges of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon against Donye Jackson had been dismissed.

Jackson had been scheduled for a court hearing Friday morning but it was canceled.

"The dismissal is not permanent," Knerr wrote. "The decision today was made in consultation with the lead detective on the matter and the victim."

Knerr wrote that the state can't comment further on the case.

The shooting happened on Hitt Street near Locust Street late Oct. 21, 2022.

The shooting injured three people, including an MU student who investigators say was an innocent bystander. Investigators said one person suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder, another had a gunshot wound to the leg and the third was shot in the stomach.

Jackson posted bond in July 2023.
