A Columbia man accused of stabbing a man to death in April will be evaluated by the Department of Mental Health, according to court filings.

Demetrice M. Tatum, 39, of Columbia, was charged in April with first-degree murder and armed criminal action after he allegedly stabbed Kejuan Allen to death at Douglass Park. He is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond.

The order for evaluation was filed on Monday. A report is required to be filed within 60 days by the examiner. According to previous reporting, the DMH has had issues going through its list of jailed defendants needing mental health evaluations.

According to previous reporting, a witness stated in court documents that Tatum used a stun gun on Allen before he cut Allen’s throat and stabbed him 20 times.
