A man who was accused of stabbing a woman on Wednesday morning in the 1100 block of West Broadway in Columbia has been charged with two felonies.

Michael James, 55, of Columbia, was charged with first-degree domestic assault and armed criminal action. The Columbia Police Department announced his arrest in a Wednesday afternoon press release, but he has yet to appear on the Boone County Jail roster, as of Thursday afternoon.

A warrant was ordered on Thursday and his bond was denied. A court date has not been set.

According to the probable cause statement, James had cut the woman’s throat with a knife and Wednesday’s press release says she was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. Court documents say the victim needed emergency surgery.

Police were called around 6 a.m. and saw the victim with “copious amounts of blood” on their clothes and a cut on their neck, the statement says. James was found in the 1400 block of Gary Street and tried to run from police when they told him to stop, the statement says.

In the heavily redacted probable cause statement, James allegedly told police that he and the victim got into an argument at their residence and claimed they each grabbed knives. He then claimed the victim swung a knife at him first. James then allegedly admitted to swinging a knife at the victim but claimed he didn’t know if he hit her, the statement says. James allegedly told police that the victim admitted to cheating on him, court documents say.

James allegedly claimed to have been in a fight with a man at the residence on Tuesday. Court documents claim James is currently on probation.
