Audrain County man charged after allegedly shooting gun, smacking teenager

MEXICO, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Mexico, Missouri, man was charged with four felonies and two misdemeanors after he allegedly fired a gun before smacking a teenaged driver on Saturday.

James Vomund was charged on Monday with endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, third-degree assault and a pair of misdemeanors: Unlawful use of a weapon and second-degree property damage. He is being held at the Audrain County Jail without bond.

A court appearance for Vomund was filed on Monday. A hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the probable cause statement, Vomund was parked in the road on Audrain County Road 751 when the victim allegedly was stopped behind Vomund’s vehicle and honked a car horn. The victim allegedly told law enforcement that Vomund pointed a gun away from himself and fired it while standing in the road, the statement says.

Vomund then allegedly pointed his gun at the victim while his finger was on the trigger, the statement says. Vomund then hit the hood of the vehicle with the gun, before allegedly walking up to the driver’s window and smacked the teenager in the face, court documents say.

Three witnesses allegedly told law enforcement that they were parked with Vomund in order to talk with him. Witnesses claimed that the teenager was driving fast, stopped and honked his horn at Vomund’s vehicle that was in the road, court documents say. One witness claimed Vomund fired a shot into the air, while two other witnesses say he fired the gun into a ditch, court documents say.

Two of the witnesses claimed to have seen Vomund hit the hood of the victim’s vehicle before hitting the teenager, according to the probable cause statement.
