CPD: Police respond to shots fired call on Volunteer Drive; one woman with injuries not related to gunshots
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
More than a dozen Columbia police officers were seen Wednesday near the 5400 block of Volunteer Drive in Columbia after shots were fired.
Columbia Police Department spokesperson Jenny Hopper told ABC 17 News that police responded to a report of shots fired. Police later confirmed shots had been fired.
When reporters arrived, police tape was not up, but police were seen searching the area.
Hopper said a woman had injuries that were not related to shots being fired. No arrests have been made. The scene was cleared after 5 p.m.
ABC 17 News spoke with nine neighbors who shared similar accounts of what happened that afternoon.
One man said he heard several pops and then tires screech, another said he heard what sounded like four gunshots and that the whole thing only lasted a few seconds.
“I was just inside chilling and heard a bunch of gunshots,” neighbor Trenton Reed said. “Somebody took right off, so I’m pretty sure it was a drive-by.”
A pair of neighbors claimed after they heard shots ring out, they went outside and saw a vehicle speed away. Those neighbors told ABC 17 News that they saw roughly 10 people yelling and screaming before two women started fighting.
Neighbors claim one woman was screaming at another woman, who was across the street. One of the women was allegedly heard saying “you need to get out of here” to a man.
Residents claim that man then got into a vehicle with a woman and drove away. The woman later returned without the man and ran inside a home, neighbors claim.
The group of people outside who were arguing quickly dispersed when police arrived, neighbors say. An ABC 17 News cameraman saw a group of people come back outside and resume arguing after police left.
