Sedalia dentist sentenced for tax evasion

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Sedalia dentist was sentenced in federal court on Wednesday for withholding more than $617,000 in earnings from the IRS over a six-year period, according to a press release from the Department of Justice.

Nohaud Naseef Azan, 66, was sentenced a year in prison without parole and was ordered to pay $269,517 in restitution to the IRS, the release states.

Azan pleaded guilty on Dec. 15, 2022, to attempting to interfere with the administration of internal revenue laws.

The release states that Azan owned and operated a dental practice. He was audited in 2011 for improper deduction of personal expenses on his corporate tax returns over the three prior years, the release states. He allegedly admitted to cashing patients’ checks into his personal bank account, the release states. The IRS found more than 1,000 checks Azan cashed or deposited from 2011-18.
