Columbia man charged in chase that led to school lockdown
CALLAWAY COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Columbia man who was arrested in a multi-county chase that led to a lockdown at the North Callaway School District on Wednesday has been charged in two counties.
Colby Joe Schooling, 34, was charged in Audrain County with first-degree kidnapping, resisting arrest, driving without a license, failure to yield and reckless driving. He was charged in Callaway County with resisting arrest, driving while revoked and leaving the scene of an accident.
Schooling is being held at the Audrain County Jail without bond. A confined docket hearing was held Thursday at the Audrain County Courthouse. A court date in Callaway County has not been set.
According to a probable cause statement, an Audrain County deputy saw a 2006 maroon Hyundai Sonata pass him near Mexico. The vehicle had a tinted driver-side window and tinted plates. The deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop and Schooling did not initially pull over, the statement says. Schooling then pulled over and the brake lights stayed on, which the deputy wrote could have indicated that he was planning to take off, the statement states.
Schooling drove off and a chase ensued on Highway 54 towards Callaway County. The Audrain County probable cause statement says speeds exceeded 120 miles per hour, and the Callaway County statement says speeds topped 130 mph.
Schooling’s vehicle eventually crashed on Highway 54 at Callaway County Road 147 when he tried to avoid tire spikes that were deployed by law enforcement, the statements say. He tried to run away, but was caught by deputies about 670 feet away from the crash, according to the Callaway probable cause statement.
Two women were found in the Hyundai and one of the women told law enforcement that she tried to get Schooling to stop and let her out, but Schooling refused, the statement says.
