Columbia man accused of stabbing another man several times at Douglass Park

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia man has been charged with two felonies after he was accused of stabbing a man several times on Wednesday night at Douglass Park.

Gary Pattillo, 46, was charged on Thursday with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. He is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond. He was booked into the jail at 1:21 a.m. Thursday, according to jail records. A court date has not been set.

Court documents state that Columbia police responded to a call at Douglass Park where they found a victim with stab wounds to his head and neck. Officers found a knife at the scene.

According to the probable cause statement, a witness saw Pattillo standing over the victim with his hands in the air and while saying "he attacked me, so I stabbed him." Police also said they saw the victim's head and neck covered in blood.

Police viewed video from Douglass Park that allegedly showed Pattillo and the victim arriving together at the park and sitting at a picnic table near the playground. Police then saw the victim fall to the ground and roll away from the table.

Pattillo was allegedly seen putting the victim in a chokehold before getting on top of him and started swinging at the victim “in a downward angle.” The probable cause statement says this continued “intermittently for approximately 25 minutes” until first responders arrived.

Rogers Street was blocked off for several hours on Wednesday night from Providence Road to Fifth Street as police searched the scene.

Pattillo also had an active warrant from 2015 for failure to appear, according to court records. Pattillo had pleaded guilty on June 17, 2015, to misdemeanor peace disturbance and was sentenced to two years of supervised probation with a 120-day suspended sentence. A probation violation hearing was set for Sept. 14, 2015, and a warrant was issued Oct. 14, 2015.
