A Jefferson City man charged in relation to an overdose death was arrested on Dec. 31 and charged on Monday with a felony and a misdemeanor.

Darren Thames, 29, was charged with second-degree murder in relation to a 2020 fentanyl overdose death in the 3400 block of north Ten Mile Drive. Text messages found on the victim’s phone allegedly showed the victim purchased drugs from Thames, according to previous reporting.

Thames had posted a $100,000 bond in 2021. His bond was revoked on Nov. 22 after a violation, according to court records. His bond was surrendered on Wednesday

On Wednesday, Thames was charged with delivery of a controlled substance and driving while revoked. An arraignment for those charges is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cole County Circuit Court.

According to the probable cause statement, Thames was seen driving a gray Chevrolet Equinox in the 1100 block of Buena Vista Street on Dec. 31. A Jefferson City police officer initiated a traffic stop in the 1500 block of Edmonds Street because he knew of his warrants.

Police searched the vehicle and found 1.55 pounds of marijuana, according to the statement. Three ounces is the legal limit in Missouri. Thames allegedly said he had a medical marijuana card and the weed was for personal use.
