A Columbia man was charged with third-degree assault on Tuesday after allegedly assaulting a nurse at University Hospital.

Cody Alan Douglass, 38, is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond. A court date has not been set.

According to the probable cause statement, police saw video footage of Douglass running up to a nurse, grab her hair and slam her to the ground. Once the nurse and Douglass were on the ground, Douglass was allegedly seen in the video slamming the nurse’s head against the floor several times, according to the statement. Douglass allegedly held onto the victim’s hair until staff were able to separate them.

The victim had allegedly told police that she was walking of a nursing station when Douglass ran up to her, put his hands around her neck and hair and threw her to the ground. The victim told police that she was not sure how many times her head was slammed, but stated she felt like she was going to die, the probable cause statement says. The victim told police the attack was unprovoked, according to court documents.

The victim allegedly stated she had pain in the back of her head and in her knee. Police saw redness around the victim’s neck, according to court documents.

A mental health technician allegedly told law enforcement that she was making a bed in another room when she heard the nurse screaming, according to court documents. She allegedly told police that she saw Douglass hitting the nurse’s head while she was on the ground.

The technician allegedly heard Douglass say, "if you treat me like I violent psychopath, then I`ll act like one," according to the statement.

Another nurse and technician saw the attack and intervened, according to the probable cause statement. The nurse had allegedly heard Douglass say, “I’m ready to go to jail.”
