Another arrest has been made in relation to the  June 26 homicide on Dove Drive in Columbia, according to a Thursday night social media post from the Columbia Police Department.

Police say Maurice Penny Jr., 39, of Columbia, was arrested in connection to the shooting death of Deshon Joseph Houston, 33, who was found dead outside of a home in the 3200 block of Dove Drive.

The post states that Penny was seen with Ja’Shaun Barney, 18, when Barney was arrested last week. Barney was charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. He is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond.

Police claim Penny had a role in preventing Barney’s arrest. Police say Penny is accused of hindering a prosecution. He was arrested in the 900 block of Jefferson Street on Thursday and was brought to the Boone County Jail. Charges have yet to appear on Casenet.

Federal court documents indicate that Penny had been in federal custody when the shooting occurred.

Police previously arrested Jajuan Crockett, 22; Damarkus Williams, 18; and Bryton Allen, 20, all of Columbia, in connection with the homicide investigation. All three were charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action and are being held at the Boone County Jail without bond.

Police are still looking for three men, who are also charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action:

  • Alqueze Jones, 19
  • Deljuan Turner, 19
  • Deazes Turner, 21

Warrants for their arrests were issued July 7 and no bond was set.

Crockett has a hearing scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17; while Allen’s next hearing is 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, and Williams’ next hearing is 8:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4.

Police responded to a home in the 3200 block of Dove Drive around 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 26 for a call of shots fired, where they found a man dead, later identified as Houston. Police then responded to a second scene in the 3800 block of West Gibbs Street near Interstate 70 Drive Northwest that they said was connected to the Dove Drive scene.

Allen was one of the men accused of shooting from two vehicles, a white Ford Explorer and a gold Acura, when Houston was shot in the head, according to court documents. The vehicles sped away from the scene after the shooting and the Ford Explorer, which had allegedly been stolen, crashed.

Multiple law enforcement agencies searched the area for hours with K-9s and helicopters but the suspects were not found at the time, according to previous reporting.

The SUV had bullet holes in it, police say. Witnesses described people shooting from the SUV and someone standing up in the Acura's sunroof and firing a gun. Police believe Crockett was in the SUV and Williams was in the Acura.
