A Sedalia man was charged on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in a shooting a man in the head in the 100 block of Main Street in Sedalia on Friday.

Nathaniel A. Shipman, 29, is charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, shooting at a motor vehicle or person, and unlawful use of a weapon. A warrant was issued on Wednesday and a $150,000 bond was set. A court date has not been set.

According to a heavily redacted probable cause statement, video captured from a pawn shop showed several people outside a bar early Friday. The statement says someone made a comment that angered Shipman, which led to an argument and fight among several people.

A Sedalia police officer determined that Shipman pulled out a gun and pointed it at several people. A man – whose name is redacted – allegedly tried to get the gun out of Shipman’s hands and was shot in the head. The bullet went through the man’s scalp and exited on the side of his head before hitting a truck, the statement says. Estimated damage is listed at $5,302.37 in the probable cause statement.

After the gun was fired, Shipman allegedly beat the man with the gun, causing blood to get on the gun, the probable cause statement says. Blood was still on the gun when it was recovered by law enforcement.

Shipman allegedly denied the events to law enforcement. The truck’s owner told law enforcement that Shipman offered to pay for the damage, the statement says. Shipman continued to deny the events.

He was then arrested and placed on a 24-hour hold, according to the probable cause statement.
