Grand jury indicts Columbia man accused of killing pregnant woman on first-degree murder
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Columbia murder suspect is now charged with first-degree murder after his grand jury indictment in Boone County.
Sevance Brewer, 31, is accused of shooting a pregnant woman at a home on the 4800 block of Clearview Road in Boone County on Aug. 1. He had first been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, armed criminal action and illegal gun possession.
The victim was pregnant when she was killed, authorities say.
However, a grand jury indictment him Friday on first-degree murder for the woman's murder, along with other charges including second-degree murder for the child's death. First-degree murder can carry a penalty up to death.
Boone County deputies said the attack was likely a domestic violence situation. Court documents allege Brewer shot the woman during an argument. Brewer also has charges from 2019 and 2021 for domestic assault, "in which the victim appears to be the same as the victim in the present case."
Brewer was in Missouri Department of Corrections custody Tuesday without bond. An arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 8.
