A Columbia man was arrested and charged after he was accused of shooting at another person in front of a house on Saturday in eastern Columbia.

Aaron McCann, 36, was charged with first-degree domestic assault, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action. He is being held without bond at the Boone County Jail. An initial court appearance was set for Monday by video from the jail. Jail records indicate his next court date is 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28.

A woman told police she had previously in a relationship with McCann and he called her saying he wanted a watch back, according to the probable cause statement. McCann then allegedly threatened to shoot up a shopping center in the 3600 block of Interstate 70 Drive Southeast, the statement says.

The alleged victim said McCann drove south on Woodridge Drive and fired three or four shots while in a Saturn SUV, according to the statement. He then allegedly hit the curb in a roundabout and drove off. The victim said she thought she was hit.

Another witness in the area told police that they heard three or four gunshots coming from Woodridge Drive, according to the probable cause statement. They also allegedly told police that the front passenger window of the SUV was down and the driver’s arm was extended and holding a gun that was pointed out the window.

McCann was arrested after police conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of East St. Charles Road and Snead Drive.

McCann allegedly told police that he messaged the woman’s teenaged daughter, demanding a watch and diamond rings to be returned. He then claimed the woman’s son asked him if he “wanted smoke,” which is described as slang for a shooting in the probable cause statement. McCann claimed the son made comments about going to McCann’s house.

McCann allegedly told police that he went to the woman’s house, saw the son outside and shot at him three times, the statement says. He then allegedly told police that he was defending himself from the woman’s son.

He then allegedly told police that “at the end of the day,” he was the one who shot a gun and he was going to “own” up to what happened, according to the probable cause statement.
