Man accused of stealing vehicle with fake check in Osage County

A Stoutland, Missouri, man is accused of trying to steal a vehicle with a fraudulent check in 2022.
David Murdock, 60, is charged in Osage County with stealing a vehicle, forgery and identity theft. Charges were filed Tuesday. A warrant was issued Wednesday with a $15,000 bond. Murdock is not listed in online jail records and a court date has not been set.
The probable cause statement says that Murdock entered a store on June 20, 2022, and tried to buy a motorcycle. He allegedly provided the an ID that showed his face, but had the victim’s personal information and signed a check – that had the victim’s name – totaling $5,342.61.
On May 17, 2023, the Camden County Sheriff’s Office allegedly told the Osage County Sheriff’s Office that the name on the check was within their jurisdiction and that the Osage Police Department had a case involving the victim and Murdock about identity theft.
It was eventually discovered that a truck was stolen from a business in Osage Beach with the same name and circumstances, the probable cause statement says.
On June 8, a deputy was contacted by a Department of Revenue agent, who allegedly said Murdock stole another person’s identity to make fraudulent purchases.
