JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Jefferson City man was charged Tuesday after allegedly breaking into an apartment and hitting a woman multiple times in the face.

Malcolm Mayes, 27, is charged with first-degree burglary, third-degree domestic assault, violating an order of protection and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

A warrant was issued and no bond was set. He is not in custody, according to the probable cause statement. An arraignment is set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Cole County Circuit Court.

The probable cause statement says the victim has an order of protection against Mayes and that he had a key to her apartment. Mayes was allegedly placing chairs under the door handles of the apartment in case he attempted to enter, the probable cause statement says.

The woman allegedly told police that she had her kitchen window open and saw Mayes walk past and go to the back door of the apartment. The woman grabbed her 7-month-old baby and ran to the front door. The woman told police that Mayes saw her run out the door and that he ran around the building and met her at the front, the probable cause statement says.

The woman told police that Mayes hit her in the face twice while she was holding her child, the probable cause statement says. Police saw swelling on the woman’s face. The woman then told police that Mayes poured a bottle of Sprite on her and ran away, the probable cause statement says.

Mayes allegedly tried to call the victim multiple times while she was interviewing with police.
