Man who pleaded guilty to murder charged after alleged machete attack
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A St. Louis man who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and other felonies 25 years ago was charged after allegedly attacking a man in the woods with a machete on June 4.
Carl Pearson, 52, is charged with first-degree assault and armed-criminal action. He is being held without bond at the Boone County Jail. An initial court appearance was held Wednesday.
He is also charged with forgery in St. Charles County and had a warrant for his arrest for failure to appear.
On Nov. 2, 1998, Pearson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, two counts of armed-criminal action, first-degree robbery and attempted escape from confinement. He was sentenced to 22 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.
On June 4, an alleged victim showed up to the Columbia Police Department with multiple cuts where they were bleeding, according to a heavily redacted probable cause statement. The victim told police then and on June 7 that they were attacked -- with a machete -- by a man named Carl in the woods in Boone County, but did not know their last name.
Police showed the victim a photo of Pearson from their records – according to the probable cause statement – and the victim said he was the one who attacked them.
