This year has seen several high-profile violent crimes, including the deadly shooting of two teenagers at a party over the weekend and the wounding of four others.

Official statistics aren't available yet for the year, so it's difficult to know whether violent crime is on an upswing in Columbia and Boone County.

Official statistics show violent crime hit its most recent high in the 1990s then dropped. However, violent crime has been on a generally upward trajectory in Missouri since 2014.
