A Columbia man is accused of stealing a check from a mailbox and trying to steal money on Feb. 22.

Reggie Dale McBride, 46, is charged with forgery and stealing more than $750. He was arrested Saturday and is being held in the Boone County jail on a $15,000 bond. An initial court appearance was held Monday.

On March 17, a manager at Hawthorne Bank told police that McBride entered the location on East Walnut Street on Feb. 22 with a check for $5,750.30 made out to him. The manager told police that McBride provided a driver’s license and the check was cashed, according to the probable cause statement.

The manager allegedly told police he later realized the check appeared to be fraudulent. The owner of the account was contacted and said he did not write the check and that it was taken from his mailbox, the probable cause statement said.

The bank provided photos from a security camera that appeared to show McBride, according to the probable cause statement.
