Columbia police arrest juvenile in relation to 2020 shooting death at Cosmo Park

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia police have arrested a juvenile in relation to the 2020 shooting death of Jermaine Spain, according to a press release from the Columbia Police Department.

The youth was arrested in relation to a shooting at Cosmo Park on Nov. 2, 2020. The person who was arrested was not identified. The press release stated he is accused of second-degree murder.

Previously, Maurice D. Banks, Jr. was arrested May 26, 2022 in Las Vegas,. Banks, 20, of Columbia, was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree assault and armed-criminal action. He is being held at the Boone County Jail on an $800,000 bond.

A pre-trial conference for Banks is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, June 5 at the Boone County Courthouse. A jury trial is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 21.

Isaiah C. Brunson was also charged with second-degree murder and delivery of a controlled substance. Brunson, of Kansas City, has a hearing scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, May 15.

At approximately 6 p.m. on Nov. 2, 2020, police responded to a report of shots fired at the park and found a deceased man who was later identified as Spain, 19, of Columbia.

According to previous reporting, court documents said Brunson went to the park to help sell marijuana to a group of people. Police said Brunson allegedly told officers the other group of people started shooting during the drug deal. Police said marijuana was found on Brunson after he drove himself to a hospital for treatment of his gunshot wound.
