Columbia Police Department reports increase in thefts from vehicles

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia police have warned at least one apartment complex to be on the lookout for people stealing from unlocked cars.

In an email sent out to residents of Aria Apartments in southeast Columbia, complex ownership says the Columbia Police Department notified them of an increase in car break-ins at all properties across the city.

"This is a friendly reminder to please lock vehicles and remove valuables. Nothing should be left unattended or in sight. Doors should be locked and secured at all times," the email says. "Please be sure that all access doors (if relevant to your building) shut securely behind you as you enter the building and that all doors to your unit remain locked as you are home if you are leaving. Should you see anyone suspicious walking around the property, please don't hesitate to call the Columbia Police Department."

The issue of car break-ins and thefts in Columbia is not new. Electronic signs warning residents of thefts are frequently seen throughout the area.

Paul Baker, the manager for Mark's Mobile Glass, says the Columbia location has seen a noticeable increase this year in people needing their windows fixed after becoming a victim of a car break-in. He said it is most likely caused by warmer weather and more people being out, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Baker said the cost of the service for having your windows fixed varies from case to case, depending on the severity of the break. Some people could pay up to $500.

Although break-ins do occur in areas where light posts and security cameras are noticeably in use, Baker said the biggest piece of advice he has for avoiding situations like this is to keep your car in well-lit, secured areas. He also warned against attempting to fix the glass of your car on your own, as it is a complicated process, and to check-in with your insurance agent after learning your car was broken into.

Police do not keep specific statistics on thefts related to vehicles. However, police do keep a report of overall thefts. According to the Boone County Sheriff's Office, there have been approximately 20 thefts in the county within the last 30 days.

Columbia police reported 2,376 thefts in 2021, the latest year for which data is available.
