Two shot including child at Demaret Drive

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Boone County Sheriff's department and other law enforcement agencies are investigating a report of shots fired in the 700 block of Demaret Drive.

According to the Boone County Sheriffs department's Facebook, around 5:11 p.m. Sunday, Boone County Joint Communications received numerous calls reporting shots being fired in the area.

At least one caller reported a child had been shot according to the department.

Law enforcement and EMS were dispatched to Demaret Drive around 5:15 p.m. Boone County Fire Protection District, who provided mutual aid, confirmed multiple people were shot.

Responding personnel discovered an adult male and a female child had been shot. Both subjects were seriously injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

ABC 17 crews on the scene saw at least nine evidence markers on the ground and police tape around an area of Demaret.

Boone County Sheriff's Department said a disturbance between parties led to gunfire. It is believed the child, who happened to be in the area, was shot and the man who was shot was possibly involved in the disturbance, according to the sheriff's department.

The sheriff's department said there is no reason to believe there are any outstanding suspects and do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.

Aliciana Hill lives in the area, and she said there has been at least five shooting happen in the area since she moved there. Hill added that she no longer feels safe living in the area, especially as a parent.

"Horrible I mean, my son always stares out of the windows and sees kids playing and I can't even let him go outside and play with other kids," said Hill. "Things like this happen. We're not in a safe neighborhood. there's a lot of bad things that go on here and I wish it weren't like this."

The sheriff's department said this is an ongoing investigation, and more information may become available later. The department has asked anyone from the public with information to contact the Boone County Sheriff’s Office through Boone County Joint Communications by calling 573-442-6131 or 311.
