Judge denies bond reduction for Columbia mother accused in baby’s death
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Columbia woman accused in the death of her infant daughter was in court Friday to see if a judge would give her a way to bond out of jail.
Lavosha Daniels filed a handwritten note this week asking the judge to reconsider his current no-bond order and release her with ankle monitoring. She noted her willingness to cooperate with prosecutors.
Daniels said in the letter that she wanted to get her life back together and be with her kids.
Daniels is charged with abandoning a corpse and child endangerment in the 2017 death of her infant daughter. Police believe the girl was between 4 and 5 months old when she died. Police say they cracked the case when they found a letter written by Daniels that said the baby died after being alone with her father.
Police discovered the body in a wooded area behind a tire store in 2019. Charges were filed this June.
Public defender Manuel Tatayon asked Judge Kevin Crane on Friday to hear that motion for a bond reduction. Prosecutor Susan Boresi was unable to make Friday’s hearing.
Crane denied the bond reduction. Tatayon and the representative from the prosecutor’s office met briefly at the judge’s bench before the hearing ended with Crane setting another hearing for Oct. 3.
Daniels appeared by video from the Boone County Jail and didn’t speak during the hearing that lasted around 5 minutes.
Staffone R. Fountain, the baby’s father who is the other suspect charged in the case, is scheduled to be in court Wednesday and has been ordered to appear. He is charged with first-degree murder and abandoning a corpse.
