Police arrest suspect in weekend Columbia shooting

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Police arrested a suspect Monday in connection with a weekend shooting in east Columbia that left one person with "critical" leg injuries.

Marquez Elam

Witnesses said Marquez Elam fired at several people in the area of McKee Street and Orchard Lane from inside an SUV on Saturday, according to probable cause documents. Police arrested Elam Monday on charges of first-degree assault, shooting from a vehicle, armed criminal action, failure to register a vehicle and driving without a license.

Surveillance footage from a nearby liquor store and from the home where the shooting occurred confirmed Elam was in the area at the time of the shooting, according to a probable cause statement. The statement says Elam intentionally tried to get away from officers when they showed up to arrest him.

It wasn't clear Monday whether Elam had been booked into jail. He will be jailed without bond.

The victim's condition was unknown Monday.
