COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Boone County prosecutor has charged a Columbia man after he allegedly fired a gun 11 times at a vehicle in the Women's Hospital parking lot just after 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Derrick Sleet is charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Police responded to several gunshots and after going through security camera footage saw Sleet pull a gun and shoot at the vehicle 11 times as it was leaving the parking lot.

Police recovered all of the shell casings and found several bullets struck the victim's car and a nearby medical clinic across the street.

Investigators say Sleet was later reported to be going through the grocery bags at a vehicle parked at the Ronald McDonald House. Officials say someone confronted Sleet and Sleet lifted his shirt to show off his gun. This caused the man to go back into the Ronald McDonald House and put it on lockdown.

After that incident, investigators report that Sleet was found allegedly trespassing at a home on the 100 block of Arbor Drive before he ran off into the woods.

Sleet was later then taken into custody near Hominy Creek Trail.

During a post-Miranda warning interview, Sleet told investigators that he was trying to harm the victim in the parking. Sleet then told police he hid the gun in a wooded area near Hominy Creek.

The man that confronted Sleet at the Ronald McDonald House also identified him in a photo lineup.

Sleet is being held without bond in the Boone County Jail.

Sleet has a docket hearing scheduled for March 30 and a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 5.
