Columbia man gets 15 years in prison for child’s death

MGN

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia man found guilty of killing his infant daughter was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in state prison.

Cortavia Smith, 24, was charged in 2018 after his 6-month-old daughter's death. Smith told investigators he accidentally kicked the girl while lying in bed.

A jury found Smith guilty of child endangerment resulting in death and recommended a 15-year sentence in October. Judge Jeff Harris followed the jury's recommendation. Harris denied Smith's request for probation.

Smith remained in the Boone County Jail on Thursday afternoon. He is also charged with four counts of endangering a jail worker, visitor or another inmate with bodily fluids. A hearing in that case is set for later this month.
