BOONVILLE, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Cooper County Prosecuting Attorney's Office has charged a driver accused of hitting a child who ran into the road.

Treyvon D. Korte, 20, of Boonville is charged with one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident that caused an injury.

The crash happened on May 12 in the 400 block of East Ashley Road just after 7:35 a.m.

According to court documents, Korte was driving southbound on East Ashley Road when a child ran out into the road from between two parked vehicles. Korte is accused of driving away without checking on the victim after the front end of his vehicle knocked the child down.

A man who said he is the child's father told ABC 17 News that the boy did not run out from between parked cars. He said the boy was waiting to cross the street and started crossing when an adult signaled to him that it was safe to do so.

A witness followed Korte after the crash and helped police find him, documents say.

The child is a student in the Boonville School District. District officials said after the crash that the child was not seriously hurt.

Korte is scheduled to appear in court June 29.
