Callaway County Sheriff’s Office notifies FBI about church vandalism

FULTON, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Callaway County Sheriff's Office has alerted the FBI to its investigation of vandalism at a Holts Summit church.

Sheriff Clay Chism said Friday that his office has notified federal authorities about the investigation into damage reported early Wednesday at Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church.

Chism said the motive for the vandalism -- which included busted walls, pews, windows and doors in the two church buildings -- is not known but his office is not ruling out a racially-motivated attack on the predominantly Black church.

"If that motive is substantiated, the FBI stands ready to assist with federal resources," Chism said.

Chism said the church has been the victim of vandalism several times over the years.

The church was founded by slaves in the 1800s. Pastor Gordon Coleman said the damage will cost $15,000 to $20,000 to repair.

Chism said Friday the investigation continues and no arrests have been made.
