Jefferson City police help with Florida cold case

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Jefferson City police say a woman has been tracked to central Missouri and arrested in a Florida cold murder case.

Melissa J. Schafer was arrested Thursday with help from Columbia police, the Jefferson City Police Department said in a news release, after Florida authorities tracked her to Jefferson City.

Schafer was wanted in the May 17, 1999 killing of Saad Kawaf in Deerwood, Florida, according to a report by Action News Jax.

Florida authorities also arrested a former Jacksonville Sheriff's Office employee, William Baer Jr. Baer is Schafer's ex-husband.

Jefferson City police did not provide details about how Schafer was found and referred all questions to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
