JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

An inmate at Jefferson City Correctional Center was sent to the hospital after a stabbing at the prison Thursday.

Missouri Department of Corrections spokeswoman Karen Pojmann said one inmate attacked another with a homemade weapon around 10:30 a.m.

Pojmann said the victim was stabbed multiple times and treated at a Jefferson City hospital.

Pojmann said the stabbing is under investigation and that the inmate suspected of the stabbing was moved to another area of the prison.

It's unclear what caused the attack.

Pojmann said the incident was referred to the Cole County prosecutor's office. Charges had not been filed Friday morning.
