Columbia man gets probation for violating Iran sanctions

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia man will serve two years of probation after he pleaded guilty last year to falsifying records about shipments ultimately headed to Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions.

Massoud Latifi was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Jefferson City after pleading guilty in December. Latifi was indicted in May 2011 but was arrested in September in New York state. He was given credit for time served.

Latifi pleaded guilty to misrepresenting or concealing facts on paperwork required for international shipments. In his plea agreement, Latifi admitted to shipping nutritional supplements to an intermediary in the United Arab Emirates owned by his brother, who then sent those goods to Iran and other countries.

Latifi admitted to earning about $50,000 from the shipments, according to his plea agreement.
