Outreach vaccination event held for Columbia’s Black community
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services is set to host a vaccination clinic Wednesday to "provide direct access for members of the Black community."
The event is set to take place Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church at 702 Banks Ave.
The health department said in a release, it chose to hold this clinic because of, "barriers for Black Americans to [coronavirus] vaccines that are part of ongoing disparities in access to health care and bias in the medical field."
The health department worked with local churches in the Live Well By Faith program to invite residents who are currently eligible to receive the vaccine.
It wasn't immediately clear how many people the health department planned to vaccinate at the event.
As of Wednesday, the state health department said more than 32,000 Boone County residents have had at least one dose of vaccine. The coronavirus dashboard included a little more than 49,000 total vaccine doses have been administered in the county.
Across the state, the health department said 1.3 million vaccine doses have been administered since vaccines became available and 14.2% of the state population has started the vaccination process.
