JC Parks youth baseball, softball practices to start Monday

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

JC Parks youth baseball and softball practices will start Monday after several sports seasons were delayed or canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The department's youth sports program manager Steve Schellman said practices will look different from previous seasons.

"We're following all the guidelines from the Cole County health department," Schellman said. "I like to think of them as the three S's, social distancing, sanitizing and stay home if you're sick."

The department sent a list of practice guidelines to all players and coaches. The guidelines ask everyone to follow social distancing. Players and coaches are also asked to avoid using the dugout or sharing any equipment. Chewing gum and sunflower seeds will also not be allowed on the field to keep from potentially spreading COVID-19.

Parents are also encouraged to drop their players off at the field rather than staying to watch practice. Schellman said that way the number of people at the field can be kept to a minimum.

"We're asking coaches and parents to be cooperative and patient as we get things started," Schellman said. "Everyone has been very willing and able because I think kids are just excited to get back on the field and play sports and have fun."

As of Monday, games are set to start on June 1.
