Las Vegas man killed in Cooper County tractor-trailer crash

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A truck driver from Las Vegas died Tuesday when his tractor-trailer went off the road on Interstate 70 in Cooper County.

Vernon Hawthorne, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 8 a.m. after his Freightliner went off the road then back onto the road, overturned and hit a guard rail, throwing Hawthorne from the cab, the Missouri State Highway Patrol wrote in a report. Hawthorne was not wearing a seatbelt.

The truck blocked the eastbound driving lane at mile marker 104.3, near Boonville. It also blocked the on-ramp from a rest area onto eastbound I-70, the report states.

The crash and response caused the highway's closure for several hours.
