COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Voluntary Action Center was given a $60,000 grant by RedRover to build a kennel to house pets of those experiencing homelessness.

A Thursday press release says the kennel at the Opportunity Campus will be 547 square feet and will include two rooms with space for pet housing, bathing and basic medical care. It will also provide financial support for veterinary care for pets residing at the shelter.

The release says it will allow experiencing homelessness to keep their pets close by. It will be able to serve 75 animals annually, including 56 dogs and 19 cats.

“We are thrilled we can help Voluntary Action Center welcome pets onsite for the first time through the construction of The Opportunity Campus! Pets can be the lifeline for people who are suffering from hardship. Keeping people and their pets under the safety of a shelter can bring hope and relief when not much else can,” RedRover President and CEO Katie Campbell was quoted in the release.

The $18.6 million Opportunity Campus is expected to open next spring, according to previous reporting.
