Gannett closing downtown Columbia printing of Tribune papers

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Columbia Daily Tribune's downtown printing press will close in September, moving the printing of the century-old paper to Iowa.
The Columbia Daily Tribune announced parent company Gannett's decision in a story on Tuesday. The company told staff on Tuesday about the closure and transfer of printing and packaging to the company's Des Moines facility. The Columbia facility also handles printing of Gannett's Springfield newspaper, the News-Leader.
The facility on North Fourth Street will print the last Tribune paper on Sept. 7 to go out the morning of Sept. 8, the story said.
"Where our newspaper is printed does not impact our ability to deliver outstanding journalism," a company spokesperson told ABC 17 News in an email on Tuesday. "The Columbia Daily Tribune will continue to provide readers with quality, local content that matters most to them, and to connect our valued advertising partners with the customers they want to reach. We deeply appreciate the years of service our valued colleagues have dedicated to our Columbia facility and the local community.”
The spokesperson did not say how many people worked at the facility.
The Waters family, which owned the Tribune for decades, sold the paper to Gatehouse Media in 2016. Gatehouse took over Gannett in 2019 in a billion-dollar merger between it and the USA Today publisher.
