Boone County Recorder of Deeds warns of mail scam

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Boone County Recorder of Deeds Office in a Monday press release warned residents of a mail scam.

The release says that fake notices titled "Recorded Deed Notice" have been mailed to residences. The “notices” are design to look official, but aren’t affiliated with the government and are trying to mislead people to give up $120.

“The companies responsible for these solicitations offer copies of recorded documents with a report of other information about the property, charging a premium price for documents that can generally be obtained from the Recorder of Deeds' office for $1 per page,” the release says.

“These solicitations prey on unsuspecting homeowners and provide little to no additional value. I urge all Boone County residents to contact my office directly if copies are needed," Boone County Recorder of Deeds Bob Nolte is quoted in the release.

The release says copies of recorded documents can be purchased from the Recorder of Deeds' office by visiting http://www.showmeboone.com/recorder/online-services or by calling 573-886-4345.

Property owners can also sign up for notifications at DeedWatch.BooneMO.org, according to the release.
