$8 million settlement reached in MU Health Care data breach class-action lawsuit
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A settlement has been reached in a class-action lawsuit involving a data breach of MU Health Care in 2020.
MU Health Care in September 2020 stated that private information about patients occurred during May 2-4 of that year.
Court documents say roughly 190,000 patients were impacted. An unopposed motion for final approval for the class-action settlement was filed in court on Tuesday.
Part of the settlement includes the Board of Curators and MU Health Care denying any wrongdoing in the data breach. The maximum payment from the university is $8 million.
Class members can take an option of a fixed payment of $60, or they can seek reimbursement up to $150 related to the incident, court documents say. Claims can be made at muhealthcaresettlement.com.
The class’ representatives Casey Bumbales and Amanda Kunkelman, will receive $5,000 payments. Attorney fees come out to $1.76 million.
The settlement also says MU Health Care “will maintain multifactor authentication for its email system and conduct enhanced email security training as remedial measures for at least five years.” Those measures are expected to cost $1 million.
