COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Lakeside Dog Park at Twin Lakes Recreation area in Columbia, as well as all park and trail restrooms, will close ahead of frigid temperatures.

The City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department announced the temporary closure on Friday in a press release.

Dangerously cold temperatures are entering the area this weekend, which prompted the ABC 17 News Stormtrack Weather Team to issue Weather Alert Days for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. There was a brief warmup on Thursday and Friday, with Friday having temperatures that eclipsed 50 degrees.

The city is closing the park to safeguard dogs from falling through the ice, the release says. The Off-Season Dog Park will stay open.

Restrooms are being closed to avoid breaks to the plumbing, valves and fixtures. “To prevent these breakages, park staff is incorporating precautionary measures such as adding non-toxic antifreeze to sinks and toilets, which means the facilities must remain closed,” the release says. “Restrooms are expected to reopen once temperatures return to seasonal averages.”
