Task Force 1 gets new orders as North Carolina searches continue
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A search and rescue team based in Columbia is continuing its work in western North Carolina, more than two weeks after Hurricane Helene ravaged the area.
Missouri Task Force 1 members have moved from Black Mountain, North Carolina, to Avery County, North Carolina, according to a Facebook post by the Boone County Fire Protection District. The team is headquartered in the Boone County fire district.
The new location is just north of McDowell County in western North Carolina, where members spent 13 days searching in the aftermath of Helene. This time the team's cadaver dogs will work with three other task forces to "conduct targeted and secondary searches" in places where people haven't been heard from since the storm caused massive flooding in the mountainous area.
The dog units will focus on a section of the South Toe River in Yancy County, the post says.
