COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The City of Columbia’s 72nd annual Fire in the Sky celebration is set for Thursday, July 4 at Stephens Lake Park.

The annual Independence Day event begins at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks will begin at 9:15 p.m. Last year’s celebration had a lighting system failure that caused a delay in the fireworks display.

Many of Boone Hospital’s parking lots will be available for public use for the event, the press release states.

The release says Go COMO transit will provide a free shuttle service from 5-11 p.m. from all six city parking garages to a drop-off location on East Walnut Street near Stephens Lake Park. Riders will then walk across Old 63 to get to the park, the release says.

Riders can track the locations of shuttles by using the DoubleMap app, the release says. Bike racks will be available for use. The Columbia Police Deprtment will be directing traffic.

East Walnut Street will be closed to non-residential traffic that evening. Residents of East Walnut Street do not need a pass to access the road, the statement says.

Parking meters are not enforced on observed holidays, including Independence Day.

Attendees are prohibited from bringing personal fireworks and grills; alcohol is strongly discouraged, the release states. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs.

The press release stated there will be children’s activities and crafts, food trucks and live music at the Stephens Lake Park Amphitheater. Entertainers will include Boone Howlers, Allie Bruns and We B Friends.
