About two dozen police calls made to East Campus area Friday afternoon during MU’s ‘Stop Day’
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
On Friday, University of Missouri students celebrated "Reading Day," also known as "Stop Day."
It's intended to give students a day off from class each semester to study, before finals start next week.
This year, the Columbia Police Department and MUPD planned to work to prevent students from violating the city's nuisance ordinance. CPD passed out flyers earlier this week about the ordinance and posted the flyer on its Facebook page on Friday.
A CPD spokeswoman told ABC 17 News on Thursday that the department planned on having extra officers in neighborhoods surrounding campus that had more calls during last May’s Stop Day.
A number of students told ABC 17 News that they did not see the flyers, but they weren't going to be deterred from celebrating. Students said at least one large party was broken up earlier in the day, but people from that event ended up at other locations in the East Campus neighborhood.
According to online data from the 6-hour CPD dispatch logs, between 11 a.m.-3:25 p.m., Columbia police responded to 25 calls in the East Campus neighborhood --- 16 of which were for peace disturbances.
