Early morning Columbia fire kills poultry

EDITOR'S NOTE: Firefighters at the scene initially said a person was taken to a hospital.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

One person was treated for injuries and several birds were found dead after a house fire early Thursday in north Columbia.

The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to the fire on the 5500 block of Kelsey Drive a little before 1:30 a.m.

Daniel Sarkar with the Columbia Fire Department told an ABC 17 News crew on scene that when firefighters arrived there was a fire at the rear of the home that was put out in a few minutes.

Sarkar said most of the fire was on the outside of the home.

CFD said in a release Thursday afternoon that one resident was treated at the scene for injuries suffered while trying to put out the fire. The blaze started outside the home near a poultry nesting box and the birds inside the box died, CFD says.

The bird species wasn't identified.

Damage is estimated at $15,000, CFD says.
