Mid-Missourians prepare for expected snow storm
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Columbia residents are preparing for the approaching snowstorm that is expected this week.
ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team issued a Weather Alert Day for Monday and Tuesday for the possibility of accumulating snow with road impacts. ABC 17 visited local grocery stores and spoke to customers about how they're preparing.
"When I first arrived, there were about six shopping carts available to take, so I knew it was going to be crowded in the store," said Summer Shepard, one of the many local shoppers getting supplies for the storm.
The quantity of items acquired by customers varied, with some individuals leaving the store with more supplies than others. The decision on the extent of preparations appears to be influenced by one's financial circumstances.
Dylan Robinson, a customer, expressed, "I prepare for my pets more than I do for myself. And then, depending on my financial situation, I focus on what I can do for myself, but for now, it's just the basics."
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services recommends creating an emergency kit for ice and snow storms, including a three-day supply of non-perishable food items and a gallon of water per day.
"We like to make sure that we have the usual things: milk, eggs, bread, you know, just like everybody shops for, things for the freezer, lots of the time we look for salt for the sidewalks, make sure that we have dog food, just the usual essentials," Shepard said.
There is a convenient online shopping option for those who prefer to avoid the hassle of going to physical stores. Summer Shepard highlighted the ease of selecting items through a list and scheduling a pickup the next day.
"Lots of the time, I do Walmart, but sometimes I do Aldis, and it has been very helpful. It's got a list there that I can just click, click, click, click on what I want, and so it doesn't take as long. And then we just select the time the next day and come and pick it up. So I usually do the shopping, and my husband picks it up," Shepard said.
The Boone County Government suggests wearing layers and refraining from alcoholic beverages, as they can rapidly decrease body heat, even if you feel warmer.
