COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Firefighters found an injured man outside a vacant, burning house late Friday, the Columbia Fire Department said Tuesday.

The fire department was sent to the abandoned house in the 2800 block of Rock Quarry Road at about 10:30 p.m. Friday after several callers reported the fire, CFD says in a news release. Firefighters found "significant smoke and fire conditions" throughout the single-story home.

Firefighters had to deal with boarded-up windows and apparent "hoarder-like conditions" inside the house and had to retreat because of a sudden increase in dangerous fire conditions, the release says.

A person found outside the home appears to have suffered injuries not related to the fire, CFD says. The investigation into whether that person was involved in the fire is ongoing, the department says.

The home is considered a total loss and the investigation into the fire's cause is ongoing.
