Mizzou football flops in fourth quarter against LSU Saturday

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The No. 21 University of Missouri Tigers did not keep their win streak alive, falling to No. 23 Louisiana State University Saturday morning. LSU won with a final score of 49-39.

The Mizzou Tigers are heading into the game with a 5-0 record and look to improve that with a sixth win. If the team can pull off the win, it will be the first time in a decade that they've started out a season with a 6-0 record.

In 2013, the team started out the season on a high note, winning seven straight games.

The seventh win came after a 36-17 victory over the Florida Gators at home on Faurot Field.

However, the streak was short-lived, as the Mizzou Tigers fell to the South Carolina Gamecocks in an overtime loss 27-24. Mizzou finished out the season 12-2, with a 7-1 record in conference play, winning four straight games following the loss to South Carolina.

Saturday's game will be the second sold-out game for the Tigers in one season, the first time this has happened since 2014. The first sold-out game came in September, in an upset win over Kansas State 30-27.

Mizzou Athletics Assistant Director Dave Matter told ABC 17 News that the school has seen an increase in fans attending games this year, compared to the past two.

"So our average crowd so far for three home games, again at 56,900 is more than our entire average for last season which was 54,525. So, and we haven't even gotten to the SEC home games yet," Matter said.

ABC 17 News spoke to fans ahead of Saturday's game who said the win would mean a lot. This was especially true for two University of Missouri students who said in their three years attending the school, they had never experienced game days like the ones this year.

"I mean we went from losing quite a bit to storming the field last home game, it's been amazing," said junior Mason Kirchhoefer.

Junior Brendan Head also said he was especially pleased with the increase in attendance at games.

"So like last year, and a couple years before that no one really came and now it's sold out almost every home game, it feels great," Head said.

Mizzou will head into Saturday's game with an advantage, as the last time the two teams battled was in 2020 when Mizzou came out on top 45-41.

With a sold-out game underway, traffic delays are expected.

Columbia native Tyler Bush said a win would mean a lot, growing up supporting the team. He even noted he'll never forget the game that led to the Tigers playing in the SEC Championship game in 2013.

"I remember that Texas A&M game when we knocked off Johnny Manziel and them boys to get to that game so this is huge, this is huge," Bush said.
