Suspension of Columbia residential recycling extended

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The City of Columbia said Friday that it is extending the suspension of curbside recycling.

The city in a news release did not give a date for collection to resume. The city said on May 18 that it would suspend collection for at least a month, citing ongoing staffing issues that have plagued solid waste collection. Friday's announcement extends that suspension.

Commercial recycling isn't affected.

The suspension has led to overflows at some of Columbia's nine residential recycling dropoff spots.

"Collection crews have been working extra hours to maintain the recycling drop-off sites," the city said in a news release. "The Solid Waste Utility asks residents to be respectful of crews and other residents when using the drop-off sites. Breaking down boxes before placing them in the bins will help conserve space for other customers. Please do not place recycling on the ground around the bins as this will delay collection from all sites."

The city apologized for the lack of services.

"The City of Columbia appreciates the citizens' patience as we work to restore this service for our customers," the release says.
